A 5 meses de haber lanzado el sencillo Turn up the sound y con el álbum Any day n
ow estrenándose a la vuelta de la esquina (durante las primeras semanas de octubre), el vocalista y líder de la banda The Brooks, Alan Prater, nos regaló una entrevista para explicarnos más sobre este material y, además, nos contó su experiencia como músico durante esta pesada pandemia.
Pero antes de mostrar sus sabias palabras, ¿quién es The Brooks y qué tiene que ver con Alan Prater? Bueno, la banda, catalogada como “el secreto mejor guardado del funk canadiense” por el periódico La Presse, inició en 2013, en su página web se catalogan a si mismo como “nacidos de su amor común por el funk ardiente y el soul auténtico”.
Esta composición está formada por ocho talentosos músicos: Philippe Look como guitarrista; Philippe Beaudin en la percusión; Alexandre Lapointe tocando el bajo; Maxime Bellavance en la batería y Dan Thouin en los teclados.

A cargo de los vientos, trompeta y saxófono, podemos encontrar a Dan Thouin y Sébastien Grenier, respectivamente. Mientras que Alan Prater es el vocalista principal.
A este men lo hemos escuchado junto a grandes leyendas, como en los Jackson Five o con Al Green, The O’Jays, Cameo o Michael Jackson, es decir, estamos hablando de un músico con una carrera bastante larga y experimentada, su sonido es muy distintivo por su estilo groove, una potente voz y un carisma increíble.
En mayo de este año, The Brooks estrenó su sencillo Turn up the sound, una poderosa canción con estilo funk que nos recuerda a una mezcla de James Brownn con el nigeriano Fela Kuti y un toque de jazz, estilo Herbie Hancock. Una verdadera delicia musical.

David (D). ¿Qué nos puedes decir de Turn up the sound, una canción muy contrastante con esta pandemia?
Alan (A). Es una canción realmente alegre que creamos para hacerte bailar y que te muevas en cualquier momento del día, especialmente ahora. La escogimos porque fue muy divertido para nosotros y queremos transmitir eso.
D. ¿En qué te inspiraste y cómo empezaron a escribir esta canción?
A. Empecé a escribir esta canción a finales de un tour en la Ciudad de México…bueno, la idea ya estaba; yo tomaba notas en mi teléfono de lo que veía y escuchaba. Además, estuve un fin de semana en Puerto Vallarta con mi esposa, así que estuvimos escuchando canciones y estuvimos relajados, eso me sirvió mucho de inspiración (para escribir la letra).
En este caso la música fue primero (en hacerse), los músicos llegaron con la melodía y como yo siempre tengo notas en mi teléfono, llegué a mi estudio con los sonidos, probando y mezclando la letra con el ritmo.
D. ¿Dirías que Turn up the sound es un escape o una cura para la crisis durante la pandemia?
A. Un escape, es una forma de decir ‘toma todo eso que no te sirve, ponlo lejos, ponle play a esa canción y súbele al volumen. Es un momento relax, lava tus trastes, barre, come tus tacos o haz lo que quieras”.

D. En Rockeando sabemos que pronto van a sacar su álbum Any Day Now, ¿Qué nos puedes decir al respecto?
A. El próximo álbum va a estar liberado en octubre. Pueden encontrar música alegre, muy divertida; historias entre amigos, cosas que te pasaron la noche pasada y que te hicieron reír, hay muchas historias reales, las cuales pueden ser tus historias o de amigos.
D. Se podría decir que Any Day Now es un encuentro entre amigos, ¿no?
A. Así es, es un encuentro entre amigos contándose historias.
D. ¿Qué nos dice sobre el estilo de este álbum?
A. Bueno, básicamente usamos instrumentos muy orgánicos, guitarras, trompetas, sintetizadores, sonidos de viento, cada canción te dicta qué instrumento debes usar, por ejemplo, algunos sintetizadores son de la época de los 70’s, es algo vintage.
D. ¿Cómo es tu trabajo con los músicos, quiero decir, varios de ellos vienen de estilos muy diferentes?
A. Los chicos son de todo tipo, algunos de ellos hacían clásica, rock pesado, o jazz, a mí me gusta más el R&B soul y funk, hay como tres o cuatro estilos diferentes que combinamos… se podría decir que estamos “juntos, pero no revueltos”, como mencionaste, nuestra música es muy orgánica, así que solo somos nosotros en el estudio y ¡boom!

D. Tienen planes de visitar México?
A. Definitivamente en nuestros planes está regresar a México, por ejemplo, a Guadalajara o CDMX.
D. Esta pandemia ha cambiado la forma en cómo percibimos y hacemos música, en su caso, ¿cómo ha afectado a The Brooks?
A. Esta cuarentena definitivamente nos ha lastimado porque somos muy orgánicos, amamos hacer jam y tocar juntos. Tuvimos que cancelar un tour por Alemania, Francia y gran parte de Europa. Incluso ahora con la comunicación por Zoom es diferente, difícil porque amamos tocar juntos.
D. ¿Qué nos recomiendas para sobrellevar esta crisis pandémica?
A. Bueno, amo la música, así que lo que yo hago es escuchar música, ver vídeos y escribir, todos los días escribo. Pero creo que le recomendaría a los demás es tomar ventaja de la situación: ‘si amas hacer algo, hazlo’, encuéntrate y explora esas partes de ti mismo.
Por último, Alan nos compartió una playlist donde incluye algunas rolitas que le han inspirado. Gran parte de estas tienen todo este ritmo soul y funky que el caracteriza al musico.
